Obu Ofo Nri came to Sweden to perform New Yam festival rites

oktober 03-2012 | SkandikAfrik | Culture

 The New Yam Festival was celebrated by the Igbos in Gothenburg, Sweden. “ Iri-ji Ohuru”  meaning  New Yam eating. It is a cultural and very important ceremony with strong identity among the Igbo people from Nigeria. Yam crop is the main harvest by the Igbo communities. The Igbo´s are the third-largest ethnic group in Nigeria, who are predominantly in the South Eastern part of Nigeria in the West Coast of Africa with a population of about 30 million according to CIA World Factbook.

    Igbo General Assembly (IGA) in Gothenburg, Sweden is made up of over hundred members and the association main objectives are as follows;

  • To preserve the tradition of the Igbo people as well as that of Sweden
  • Encourage its member for better integration into the Swedish society.
  • To acts as a support to its members living in Sweden.
  • Promotes the image of both the Igbo descendants and that of Sweden
  • Preserve the traditional shared values of the Igbos among our children
  • To share ideas that affect Igbos in Sweden and all over the world

    Eating of the New Yam rites was performed by H.S.H Chukwudinigbo Agwuna (Enugwu Ukwu) who is the head of Obu Ofo Nri from Nigeria and H.R.N Christian Nwangwu (Ezeigbo Na Holland) the head of Igbo people from Holland in accordance with the traditional value of Igbos. The elders are to mediate between the ancestors and gods of the land to put forward the peoples prayer for the renewed life before they eat the New Yam.

    The Igbo General Assembly also used the occasion to launch their new secretarial in Mölndal, Gothenburg where future meetings and gathering by its member will take place. Apart from H.S.H Chukwudinigbo Agwuna ,the head of Obu Ofo Nri clan in Nigeria who was invited specifically for the occasion, Nigeria Ambassador from Stockholm was represented by Mr.Ishaya Lazarus (Consular) and many other important dignitaries at the event. The President of IGA in Gothenburg, Mr. Oscar Chukuma thanked its entire member and those that came out to support them.

  Breaking of the Yam was followed by celebration.See the full detail as covered by Skandik Afrik crew.
