Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour won Sweden’s 2013 Polar Music Prize

Youssou N’Dour, singer, poet and politician from West Africa and Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho have won Sweden’s Polar Music Prize.

The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by manager of great Swedish pop group Abba. The prize which has been awarded since 1992 and won by great artists like Beatle Paul McCartney, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Bob Dylan, Dizzy Gillespie, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floid, Renee Fleeming, Keith Jarrett, Isaac Stern and Patti Smith.

Since 2012, Youssou N’Dour has been the Minister of Tourism and Culture in Senegal. The prize tag in money for the Polar Music Prize is 1 million Kronor ($154,000) with an award from the Swedish King Carl XVI.
